Description |
Exterior of Clayburn School with fence in foreground. Date amended from donor's recollection on Cyril Holbrow's advice as image shows a two-storey school. Clayburn School, Wright Street, after 1925. The original one-room school was built to educate the children of the new community developed for the employees of the Clayburn Company in 1907. In 1925 the building was raised to add a basement and a second room, a mirror image of the first, was added. The school was closed in 1937 but reopened in 1948 , the result of post war population growth. The building is currently owned by the Clayburn Community Society, who have overseen a number of projects to restore it, and is used as a community hall/museum. |
