An unidentified Wee College graduate with her diploma in early scripture. Sometime during the week of March 21, five-year-olds from the two-year program of Wee College at Abbotsford Pentecostal Assembly graduated "with the equivalent of first-year Bible school in Scripture knowledge. The concept, which originated in Edmonton several years prior to 1979, was in churches across Canada, including six Pentecostal churches in the lower mainland, and south Abbotsford Mennonite Brethren here locally. Shirley Costinak, director of Wee College at Abbotsford Pentecostal Assembly, noted that the format was designed to strictly teach Bible doctrine and is interdenominational. "Wee College encourages belief in what the Bible teaches," she added. This meant that four-year-olds in their first year learn 12 verses, and five-year-olds learn 15 verses in their second year. These verses included Psalm 23, Psalm 100, the 10 Commandments and the Lord’s Prayers. Classes lasted 90 minutes, one morning a week with a variety of activities scheduled in rapid succession to keep the children’s attention and interest. The program started in the MSA area in October 1978 and ran for 20 weeks. The teacher-pupil ratio was about 1/3. Image not published. |
