P39799 - MCC (B.C) Director Harold Koslowsky and MCC warehouse manager John Hiebert display some 10 metric tonnes of powdered egg just before the donated food was loaded with other aid en route to El Salvador. The food, along with 5,400 pound of used clothing and 11 containers of cooking oil donated to the Mennonite Central Committee left the Port of Vancouver, March 23, 1984. On its arrival to San Salvador, the aid was consigned to Catholic Relief Services, which was the only agency in the war-ravaged Central American country with license to import such supplies. The MCC shipment represented donations of materials and financial aid from various elements. The clothes, packed in 100-pound bales were donated by Abbotsford-Matsqui residents. About half of the 55 bales contained women's clothing, the other half, children's wear. Ten metric tonnes of powdered whole eggs were given by the Canadian Egg Marketing Agency, which initiated the donation. Cooking oil, which came from Calgary, was purchased with funds from the Canadian government that were earmarked for relief aid supplies. MCC (B.C.) Director Harold Koslowsky said the supplies were to be distributed throughout El Salvador to displace persons, mostly widows and children. Ongoing conflicts in the country, and those surrounding it, had left many families fatherless. The churches of El Salvador, including Mennonite, Lutheran, Baptist, Christian reformed, and Catholic had established a network for feeding those in need, through which the MCC's shipment was distributed. John Wieler, MCC Canada Overseas director, visited El Salvador in early February and noted that earlier shipments of milk powder, canned beef and oil did in fact, reach the proper destinations.
