  2. P19866 - Students from Abbotsford Senior Secondary School who will be participating in the 13th annual education trip to Victoria are Henry Schmidt, Bonnie Machell, Marion Nugent, David Toth, Gordon Andrews and Ilse Werner. They will leave February 23 and return February 25. During their stay they will visit the floor of the House, be entertained at lunch by the Speaker of the House, visit the gallery and visit historical sites. Trip is sponsored by CKNW Radio in conjunction with District 34 Board of School Trustees. There were students from Aldergrove, Langley, Newton, Lord Tweedsmuir, Princess Margaret, Queen Elizabeth, and Semiamoo, totaling 28 students on the trip, including those from Abbotsford. Accompanying the students on the ferry and the trip were Miss Shriner, Mr Frankson and Mr Gleigg, all from the mainland. They were met and escorted to the Dominion Hotel by hostess Mrs Price. They received a detailed tour of the Empress Hotel, including learning the hotel was originally built on water. They were also taken through the Thunderbird Park before entering the Parliament buildings. In the Legislative House, the students were allowed to sit in the MLAs’ chairs while the Sergeant-At-Arms, Mr Ashby, explained several government procedures. The Speaker, Mr Murray, presented each student with a mace-shaped pin. The group was then divided in half, with one half heading for lunch with Mr Murray while the other half had a tour of the archives and the library with Provincial Archivist, Mr Ireland. After switching, the students were in the House Gallery, listening to the Legislative Assembly members. The major speakers were Mr Ritcher, the Minister for Agriculture, and Mr Hartley, the MLA for Yale. Mr Gaglardi spoke in the evening, with a suggestion that a bright amber light be attached to each side of the rear of a car which would flash when the driver took his foot off the gas pedal, with a hope that this would reduce the amount of accidents. On Friday, the group went on a bus trip to Royal Roads Military College, saw a film on the academy’s merits, a complete tour of the grounds and a coffee break. They also went to visit the Government House and the University of Victoria. The students returned to the Mainland after attending an afternoon session in the Legislative buildings.
