Four Abbotsford rinks were among 44 competitive teams from across Canada – and one from Sweden -- vying for $27,000 in cash prizes during the 1979 third annual Abbotsford-Clearbrook Curling Classic January 4-7, 1980. The Bonspiel was the fourth largest cash curling tournament in North America. Team prizes in the bonspiel for the 1979 year totalled $27,000- $10,000 for the first place team, then $5,000, $3,500, $2,500 and $1,500 for the second to fifth. Commercial sponsors shared an additional $2,000 in prizes. Topping the rinks, at least in notoriety, was the Paul Gowsell and foursome from Calgary. Gowsell and company, professional curlers, had won more than $125,000 on the western curling circuit within two years. Six top teams from the Vancouver Super League entered the tournament, one of them Glen Pierce, who represented B.C. at the McDonald Brier. Five rinks from the Vernon-Kelowna competitive league were entered, as well as teams from Prince George and Victoria. The bonspiel was set to kick off January 3 with a "smoker," starting at 7 p.m. Teams were to be chosen for the draw then. The bonspiel would continue January 4 (Friday), 5, 6, and 7. Each team paid $500 to enter the tournament. Spectators were charged $2 and $5 for day and tournament passes. Image not published.
