Matsqui mayor Harry DeJong appears to be swearing in a witness during the inquiry led by Victoria Alderman Colonel Albert Hood. The man on the right is holding a book, possibly a Bible. The inquiry, led by Victoria Alderman Colonel Albert Hood, is examining the actions of two municipal employees, Bruce McIntyre and Dave Laxton, who are principals in a development firm interested in the land in the Hawthorne-King Road area near Matsqui Institution. They are represented by lawyer Harry P McLaughlin and the Inquiry Commission Counsel is represented by David Lisson. Witnesses in the inquiry include Matsqui Development Officer Alex Sommerville, the Director of Public Works, Ed Regts, Mr Loeppky, Matsqui Mayor Harry DeJong, and the MSA Administrator Brian Strong. The particular concern is the long-range plan of running sewer lines out to the 18 acre land development deal, which would allow for smaller lots – 6,000 square foot – versus the mandatory 7,500 square foot lots required if septic fields are used. The alleged profit of the deal is $260,000. The buyer of the development, an Abbotsford Consortium of local investors, bought the land for $403,000 in 1976, but the plan for development is halted, due to the draining of the land had to go through Abbotsford Council as it is in their jurisdiction. Only water and sanitary sewers can be provided by Matsqui Public Works. |
