Miss Abbotsford 1978 Shelley Griffiths (top), second runner-up Debbie Filuk (middle), and contestant coordinator Carol Lewis left Abbotsford for Vernon early Thursday morning, January 31, 1979. First runner-up, Corrine Horsting, was set to have gone but was ill. Together they attended the Vernon Winter Carnival where Abbotsford was the honored city. This was one of the major events that Miss Abbotsford attended each year. The girls and Ms. Lewis left Abbotsford early Thursday morning by bus arriving in Vernon in the late afternoon, with two full days following on Friday and Saturday. Friday’s event started with a reception and party and then on to the ice palace for the coronation of the snow queen and special presentations. Then the girls had only a few minutes to change to attend another major event of the carnival, the Snowflake Ball in the evening. Saturday was the parade and once again Shelley and Debbie had a busy morning. This was followed by a luncheon and in the afternoon a tour of the city hall. The ladies returned to Abbotsford on Sunday, February 4, 1979. Prior to leaving, Mrs. Lewis had arranged for a broadcast on MSA channel 3 where she had carnival officials as her guests, thus enabling Abbotsford and Matsqui residents to see, at least in part, some of the activities in the carnival.
