Description |
Gur Sikh Temple, 33089 South Fraser Way. Built between 1908 and 1911, the temple blends a Western architectural form with the necessary elements of a temple: prayer hall, Sukh Aasan (the room where the Guru Granth Sahib rests), granthi's (priest's) accommodations, doors on each side of the buildings and langar (communal dining room). The Gur Sikh Temple was the second temple built in Canada and with the demolition of the 2nd Avenue temple in Vancouver, became the oldest surviving temple in the Western Hemisphere. It was designated a National Historic Site on July 31, 2002. |
