Description |
Jim Reimer of the Provincial Ambulance Service and Fran Holtby, a respiratory technologist at MSA General Hospital, demonstrate with a mannequin how they teach basic lifesaving support to the general public. The course was offered through the co-operation of the hospital and Fraser Valley College, with six hours of instruction in two evenings. Each class had a maximum of 10 students. The reason for this was to ensure that students had more individual instruction. The program was being instigated Canada-wide, and the standards had been set by the American Heart Association, the Canadian Heart Association and the Canadian Medical Association. Priority people such as hospital staff, firemen, and lifeguards were required to take the course or a similar course. Students were taught by working with a mannequin which was equipped with a light indicator to show whether the student was applying correct pressure and hand positions. A tape would read-out showing actual chest compressions and ventilation effectiveness of the student. Certification by the MSA General Hospital, Fraser Valley College, and the B.C. Heart Foundation, was given to students who passed both a written and practical test. |
