Spherical metal road flare with burner at top centre. Ring handle attached at one side. Remnants of black paint finish; most of body has light patina of rust. 19.5 cm high; 19 cm diameter. |
Provenance |
This flare was used during the 1948 flood to let drivers know the road ahead was flooded. A "Toledo Torch" was a kerosene "road flare." Starting in 1929, The Toledo Pressed Steel Co. manufactured millions of small, round kerosene-burning torches. The Toledo Torch was used to alert drivers to a road hazards in Canada and the United States. These have been replaced by traffic cones/pylons, etc. |
