  7. P38322 - The fate of Aldergrove Lake Regional Park is decided; it will not be considered as a site for Lower Mainland motorsport activities. This decision made by the Greater Vancouver Regional District (GVRD) board of directors at its meeting, February 29, 1984, was among several recommendations relating to motorsports activities in the Lower Mainland. The board also urged the provincial government to work toward a resolution of the problems associated with the use of the Mission Raceway and to consider extending the lease for the Westwood Track in Coquitlam, if the land was not required for immediate urban development. It was understood that if the province was able to resolve these problems, then Campbell Valley Regional Park in Langley would likely see racetrack operations in the summer for one final year. Campbell Valley had been used by Action Raceway for racing events each summer since 1980 on a three-year lease granted by the GVRD, with a one-year extension for the 1983 season. Board directors agreed to extend the lease for yet another year on the clear understanding that it would be for the last time. The purpose of the extension was to give Action Raceway time to negotiate an alternative site for future years. The feasibility of locating a motorsport facility in the Lower Mainland had engendered considerable controversy and was the subject of a public meeting in Langley which attracted over 600 people, many of whom were opposed to the use of regional parks for such purposes. A consultant’s report on the preliminary assessment of a motorsport centre done for the province and the GVRD favoured Aldergrove Lake Regional Park for this purpose. However, in the GVRD’s view, the study did not look sufficiently at other locations, and the process of site selection should be reassessed before a final decision was made. Image not published.
