15. P39997 - A boy and a bike can go a long way. Steve Aseltine shows some push power behind his new Harley Davidson. For five years 15-year-old Steve Aseltine (#22) of Matsqui had raced his motorbike on flat tracks throughout Canada and the United States. His dream was to become an expert ride and to race professionally south of the border. He had been riding ever since he was two-and-half-years-old when his father, Daryll, gave him his first bike. In the 1982/83 season, Aseltine won 10 raced in 125cc expert class and placed second and third on several occasions in 250cc senior class in short track and half-mile. He won first place in District 27's, Washington, 125cc expert championship on a short track. He placed third in AMA Amateur Nationals 125cc short track, fourth in 250cc AMA half mile Amateur national Championship. Aseltine competed from May to late September, and despite aspiration to become an expert school work took priority over his racing. "If I'm in an accident, or something happens and I can't ride anymore, I want to have a secondary career," he said. When school was out for summer, Aseltine practiced two to three hours a day on what his family dubbed the 'Matsqui Mile,' a 1/10th-mile track in his front yard. He competed in Bellingham every Saturday night and at Cloverdale every Friday evening. Aseltine would have to wait until his 16th birthday to qualify for a professional racing license.
