2. P11923 - Full figure portrait of Nand Singh Banga and his wife, Dhan Kaur Banga. This is a manipulated image created from two separate images as Mr. Banga wanted a picture of himself and Dhan Kaur together. The photo of Mrs. Banga was taken in 1938, probably in New Westminster, before she returned to India. The photo of Mr. Banga was taken in Mission in the 1980's. Dhan Kaur Banga passed away in 1952 so when the manipulated photo was created she had been dead for some time.

3. P11924 - Full figure portrait of Mr. Banga and his sons Left to right: Agit Singh Banga, Nand Singh Banga, Bim Banga. Nand joined his father, Thakur, in 1920. It was his 14th birthday, August 8th. He immediately began work at the Abbotsford Lumber Company mill on Mill Lake. Too young for anything else, Nand was paid 15¢ an hour to stack end cuts to keep the work area clear. In 1924 Nand returned to India to marry. Within the year, as was the law at the time, Nand returned to Abbotsford with his wife, Dhan Kaur. A stranger in a foreign environment, with few other Indian women with which to associate, Nand’s wife missed the family structure she had left in India. In 1938 Dhan Kaur took her daughters and youngest son, Mohinder, and returned to India permanently to oversee family matters and be back in familiar surroundings. Bim, his father, Nand, and older brother, Ajit, made occasional trips back to India to visit. Bim recalls that things were very different after his mother left. Nand and the boys ate some meals with an aunt and uncle and maintained community connections through activities at the gurdwara. Nand taught his sons the importance of maintaining their culture and Sikh religion.

Nand worked in Queensborough at Mohawk Lumber Company. The family moved to Abbotsford in 1951 when Nand and the boys returned from India. Dhan Kaur and Bhagwan stayed in India and did not return.

12. P13099 - Full figure of Nand Singh Banga. Component of P11923 along with P13098. A portrait of Nand's wife, Dhan Kaur, taken in 1938 was combined with this one taken in the 1980's because Nand wanted a portrait of he and his wife together. Dhan had died in 1952 so to accomplish this Nand had to use an old portrait.
