Married May 13, 1919, the Murphy’s were long-time residents of the district. Three of their four children live in Abbotsford-Matsqui and one daughter, Kathleen Spray came from Denver Colorado to attend the celebration tea. John (spud) Murphy, former reeve of Matsqui, Elspeth Melmichuk, and Annie McDonald brought seven of the nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren to their parents’ Diamond Anniversary. Other relatives included Mr. Murphy’s Brother, Pete, from Castlegar and two of Mrs. Murphy’s brothers, Archie and Pat Conroy form Abbotsford. The tea began at 2 p.m. and ended at 5 p.m. with the Pinegrove Women’s Institute catering the event. The Buffet culminated with a small ceremony. Mayor Harry DeJong of Matsqui presented the Murphy’s with an honorary certificate making the couple freemen of Matsqui. He also read them his own congratulations. Moreover, letters came pouring in from dignitaries such as Queen Elizabeth and Prince Phillip who sent a congratulatory telegram from Buckingham Palace and Prime Minister Trudeau. Other messages were received from Conservative Leader Joe Clark, Premier Bill Bennett, Lieutenant Governor Bell-Irving, Health Minister Robert McLelland, and MPS Robert Wenman, and Alex Patterson. They were read privately among the family. Further festivities took place at Annie MacDonald’s home in Mt. Lehman where another buffet was served.
