  20. P26812 - The crowd of over 300 people are gathered to watch the official ribbon cutting during the official opening of the new Fraser Valley Trout Hatchery. On the far right are the special guests invited to participate in the ribbon cutting, including, right to left: Provincial Minister of Recreation Hon Sam Bawlf, former Minister of Recreation Ken Kiernan and Abbotsford Mayor George Ferguson. The $7 million facility includes a main hatchery building that encloses 40,000 square feet, proving space for 20 egg incubators, 108 fully automated feeding troughs, a research centre and public display facilities. A separate 6,000 square foot building is provided for vehicle storage, shops and the auxiliary power generator. The large rearing ponds, two ponds with a 18 foot and nine ponds with a 25 foot diameter, are located outdoors and are connected to a sophisticated water recycling system ensuring that the groundwater supply in the Abbotsford area is not adversely affected. All water used for the egg incubators, troughs and present outside ponds can be heated to 100° F from the ambient well water temperature of 48° F. Water within the ponds is recirculated and reconditioned by biological filtration after passing through a clarifier to remove solid material. 10% fresh water is constantly added to the 90% recirculated. Most of the fish eggs collected are from native or wild fish populations at various sites in the province, so only small brood ponds are located on the hatchery site. The Ministry already stocks more than 400 lakes in the province, including some of our most important recreational lakes. The primary function of the hatchery at Abbotsford will be the production of 60,000-80,000 pounds of principally Rainbow and Cutthroat Trout species for the Lower Mainland and Vancouver Island lakes, as well as a few selected streams for Steelhead and Cutthroat. Beyond the practical biological functions, the new hatchery will also be in part an educational facility, with public display areas and a theatre, depicting proper conservation practices for the 100,000 visitors expected each year.
